How Long Does It Take to Build an Architectural Scale Model?

Most architectural models require approximately two to four weeks of production after the scope, design information, and key specifications have been confirmed.

Larger, highly detailed, illuminated, or technically complex models may require more time. The total project schedule must also allow for scoping, file preparation, client approvals, packaging, transportation, and installation.

When does the production timeline begin?

Production does not begin as soon as the initial files are submitted. We first confirm what the model needs to communicate and define its scale, content, level of detail, materials, finishes, features, and delivery requirements.

The production schedule is established once the required information is available and the scope is approved.

What happens during the project?

Scope and file review

We confirm the model's purpose, audience, dimensions, detail, materials, schedule, display requirements, and delivery constraints.

Usable CAD, BIM, or 3D files are then reviewed and prepared for fabrication. If production-ready geometry does not exist, separately scoped Digital Model Development may be required.

Samples and approvals

When needed, samples or mockups are produced to confirm materials, colors, finishes, lighting, connections, or important details.

Timely feedback and approval help keep the project on schedule.

Fabrication and assembly

Components are produced using the appropriate combination of laser cutting, CNC machining, 3D printing, painting, assembly, and skilled handcraft.

The time required depends on the model's size, component count, materials, level of detail, and functional features.

Finishing and quality control

The model is finished, assembled, inspected, and tested. Lighting, removable sections, moving components, and other functional elements require additional review.

Progress and quality-control information are shared through the Carve Studio Portal.

Packaging and delivery

Packaging is designed around the model's size, fragility, destination, and handling requirements. Large models may require sectional construction, specialized crating, coordinated transportation, and on-site assembly.

Delivery and installation time should be included in the overall project schedule.

What can extend the timeline?

The most common factors are:

  • Incomplete or changing design information
  • New digital geometry that must be developed
  • Large size or extensive site context
  • High levels of architectural and landscape detail
  • Custom materials, finishes, or lighting
  • Physical samples or mockups
  • Removable, interactive, or functional components
  • Delayed feedback or approvals
  • Design changes after fabrication begins
  • Packaging, transportation, access, or installation requirements

How can you keep the project on schedule?

Define the model's purpose and audience early. Provide the most current design information available, identify the final deadline and delivery location, and confirm important decisions before fabrication begins.

If the model is required for a planning hearing, investor presentation, sales-gallery opening, exhibition, or another fixed event, include that date in the initial enquiry. We can then work backward to identify the required approval, production, and delivery milestones.
